the scrap guide

Most people throw
good money away

Not because they're careless — because a bundle of wire and a box of old taps don't look like anything worth phoning somebody about. They are. This is what we buy and how you spot it.

the whole list

What we take

Ordered by how much we want it. Copper and brass lead the list because that's the metal we're chasing.

Copper

Most wanted

Electrical wire, plumbing pipe, old extension cords, air conditioner line sets, transformer and motor windings.

  • Bright wire
  • Plumbing pipe
  • Motor windings

Brass

Most wanted

Plumbing fittings and valves, old door hardware, keys, key stock, fixtures, bearings, anything yellow-gold that isn't copper.

  • Fittings & valves
  • Door hardware
  • Fixtures

Aluminum

Takes volume

Cans, window frames, siding, gutter, extrusion, ladders, wheels, lawn furniture, clean sheet offcuts.

  • Cans
  • Wheels
  • Siding & frames

Radiators & A/C units

Call on these

Car radiators, heater cores, whole window units, condensers and coil stacks — the heavy square boxes with fins.

  • Car radiators
  • Window A/C
  • Coils

Cars, frames & parts

Whole vehicles

Whole cars, frames, hoods and doors, engines and transmissions, and whole auto parts cleanups where there's a pile to clear.

  • Whole cars
  • Frames
  • Engine & trans

Machinery & equipment

Shop loads

Machine shop cleanups, lathes and presses, bench tools, hoppers, racking, pallets of shop scrap, anything heavy that needs a crew and a truck.

  • Shop cleanups
  • Presses & lathes
  • Racking

Stainless

Check these

Sinks, counters, commercial kitchen gear, pots, racks, exhaust hoods, old appliance shells.

  • Sinks
  • Kitchen gear
  • Racks

Steel, iron & mixed

We take it

Cast iron, rebar, pipe, fencing, shelving, old stoves, appliances, and mixed loads where you honestly can't tell one metal from another.

  • Cast iron
  • Pipe & rebar
  • Appliances

where it hides

Four rooms worth checking

Before you call, walk these. You'll probably find more than you thought — and that's a better number for you.

The garage

  • Coils of old extension cord and speaker wire
  • Car batteries, radiators and heater cores off a project
  • A lawn mower, a compressor, a welder that never got fixed
  • Aluminum ladders, gutter offcuts, old wheels

The kitchen & laundry

  • Plumbing pipe and fittings under the sink — copper and brass
  • Old fridge, freezer, washer or dryer with the guts still in
  • Stainless sinks, racks and pots
  • Brass taps, valves and old cabinet hardware

The shed or attic

  • Boxes of fittings, valves and key stock left from a plumber
  • Old fixtures, light fittings and switch plates
  • A tangle of wire from a rewire
  • Tools and bench hardware nobody's touched in years

The yard & drive

  • A car, frame or trailer that isn't running
  • Fencing, shelving, an old stove, a barbecue drum
  • Air conditioner line sets and a window unit
  • Pipes, rebar and posts from a job that finished

not sure what it is

Two tests you can do at home

The magnet test

Hold a magnet to it. If the magnet grabs, it's a ferrous metal — steel or iron — and it's worth less per pound but we still want it. If the magnet slides off, you're looking at something better: copper, brass, aluminum or stainless.

The scratch test

Scratch a hidden spot with a key or a coin. Copper shows a warm reddish line. Brass shows yellow-gold. Aluminum is bright silver and light in the hand. If the colour is dull grey and it's heavy, it's likely steel.

still guessing?

Text us a photo and we'll name it

One picture of the pile is usually enough. We'll tell you what it is, roughly what it's worth, and whether it's worth a drive.
